History Ludham Store

Throwers was opened as a drapers and grocers shop in 1902 by Albert and Helen Thrower.

Over the early years the shop gradually became larger and concentrated more on the grocery business with many of the improvements carried out to cater for the needs of the people of Ludham, the surrounding area and also growing numbers of visitors from Norwich and Great Yarmouth but also the Norfolk Broads as it grew as a holiday destination from the 1920s. The shop you see today is still owned and run by the Thrower family.

Other landmarks in the development of the Throwers store where when the biggest transformation took place in 1968 when the shop was trebled in size and became self-service which was quite ground breaking at the time and in the early 1970ís a hairdressers was opened on the second floor, in what was previously the familyís living quarters. 1989 saw another important improvement when the Ludham village Post Office also came under the Thrower umbrella and was incorporated in to the store providing a priceless service for all members of the local community.
